A Quick Electrical Checklist For Your RV

Automotive Blog

Before you set off on a road trip in your RV, you should make sure that your RV is electrically sound and ready to go. Here are the eight electrical components you should check before you set off on your trip.

#1 Battery:

Check your battery under your hood and make sure that you cannot spot any corrosion on it. If you notice that corrosion is starting to develop on your battery, you'll want to clean it off. If the corrosion on your battery is extensive, you'll want to remove the battery and replace it with a new one.

#2 Converter

You should then check your converter. When you check your converter make sure that you do not see any loose connectors, overheated wires or corrosion on your converter. If you spot any of these issues, have your mechanic fix them.

#3 Wiring

Next, you should go through your hood and all panels where wires are hidden. Check all of the wires that you can see and access on your RV and make sure that none of the wires are loose. If they are loose, put them back into place. You also need to keep an eye out for corrosion. If your wires have become corroded, you'll want to replace those specific wires to ensure that your electrical systems continue to operate correctly and to prevent the corrosion from spreading.

#4 AC Plugs

Use an AC plug tests to check all the outlets in your RV and make sure that they are working properly. An AC plug tester will provide you with a reading and let you know if each unit is working right.

#5 Lighting

Don't forget to check your lights. You should take apart all of your light fixtures and remove the light bulbs from each fixture and clean them. This is a good way to check and see if any of your light bulbs needs to be replaced and to ensure that your lights run and work effectively.

#6 Fans

All of your fans should be checked out at least twice a year. You should clean your fans off and make sure that they are still spinning smoothly. In your RV, you may have a converter fan, refrigerator fan, stove hood fan and inverter fan that you'll need to check out.

#7 TV Antenna

If you have a TV antenna, you don't want to be on the road and discover that it doesn't work. Check the antenna and make sure that it is properly attached to your RV, and use some lubricant on it to ensure that it continues to move and operate smoothly.

#8 All Exterior Lights

Finally, check all of your exterior lights and make sure that they work. This includes your brake and turn signal lights

After you complete this checklist, and fix any issues, from an electrical standpoint, your RV is ready to hit the road this summer. Contact a business, such as Brad's Trailer Supply, for more information.
