3 Things You Need To Know Before Having Your Brakes Replaced

Automotive Blog

If your brakes are getting close to the end of their life, you need to schedule an appointment with your mechanic to have them fixed. Before you discuss your brakes with your mechanics, brush up on your brake knowledge. This will help you make a better, more informed decision concerning what type of parts you want to invest in when you have your brakes replaced.

#1 Choose High-Quality Rotors

Try to purchase the highest quality rotors that you can afford. Do not go for cheap rotors; although cheap rotors may cost you less up-front, they will not last as long as high-quality rotors, and you will have to replace them far sooner, costing you more money in the long run.

The primary difference between high-quality rotors and lower quality rotors is that low-quality rotors are usually a lot thinner than higher-quality rotors. This can cause the rotors to crack more easily. It can also cause the rotors to not dissipate heat correctly. If your rotors are too thin, you will not be able to rotate your rotors when you have the brake pads changed, and you will have to replace your rotors more frequently.

Instead, ask your mechanic if you can have professional grade rotors installed on your vehicle. Additionally, see if you can have either vented or slotted rotors installed on your vehicle. This will help spread the heat out more evenly on your rotors and prolong their life.

#2 Consider High-Tech Non-Standard Rotors

Another option when having your rotors replaced is to go for high-tech, non-standard rotors. One of the latest advances in rotor technology is cryogenic rotors. The metal on a cryogenic rotor is cooled to a very low temperature, then slowly heated up to an extremely high temperature. This heating process changes and alters the metal on the rotors at an atomic level. This makes the rotors handle heat better and reduces the chance that the rotor will crack. These types of rotors are designed to last significantly longer than their traditional rotor counterparts, cutting down on how frequently you need to replace both your brake pads and your rotors.

#3 Go For Ceramic Brake Pads

When it comes to brake pads, if possible, you should avoid using brake pads that are made of either metallic or semi-metallic material. Both metallic and semi-metallic brake pads can cause your rotors to wear down at a quicker rate and can be noisier.

Instead, you should use ceramic brake pads. They do not wear down as quickly as their metallic counterparts and do not wear down your rotors as much either.

Don't just drop your vehicle off; make sure that you discuss with your mechanic what types of parts they plan on using while replacing your brakes and rotors, and let them know if there are specific types of parts you are interested in using. By working together with your mechanic, you should be able to get the best brakes possible put on your vehicle.
