Outdoor Decorating With Used Auto Parts From A Salvage Yard

Blog

Vehicles that no longer serve a purpose often find their way into salvage yards. While these vehicles might not be in running condition, you can easily put the used parts found in a salvage yard to good use decorating your outdoor living space.

Here are two simple and unique decorating projects you can complete with the help of used auto parts.

1. Create a patio table using old tires.

When visiting a salvage yard, you will likely notice that there are many old tires waiting to be repurposed. You can easily incorporate old tires into your outdoor design by using these parts to construct a patio table.

Start by finding two tires that are the same diameter and investing in a sturdy piece of glass that is slightly larger in diameter than the tires to serve as your table top. Scrub your old tires with some soap and water to ensure the exterior surface is clean, then use spray paint to add some color to the tires. You may need several coats to fully cover the surface of each tire.

Once the paint has dried (which usually takes about 24 hours) you can use an industrial adhesive to secure one tire on top of the other. Place your tire base in the middle of some patio chairs, add the glass top, and you will have a unique patio table made from used auto parts.

2. Use an old rim for a hose reel.

The metal rims that hold rubber tires on a vehicle can easily be repurposed and turned into a hose reel that will help you keep your garden hose neatly stored when it's not in use. Visit a local salvage yard and purchase a metal rim whose design appeals to you.

Once you have the rim at home, use a wire brush to remove any rust spots and thoroughly clean any grease from the metal rim's surface with soap and water. Allow the rim to dry completely, then apply several coats of spray paint in a color that matches your outdoor decor. You can add decorative designs using glue-on gems, acrylic paints, or stencils if you desire.

Use some industrial-strength bolts to fasten the rim to an outdoor wall near your water spout, and wind your garden hose around the rim. Giving new life to a used automotive rim will help you prevent your hose from getting kinks and add a decorative element to your outdoor living space.

Don't be afraid to incorporate used auto parts into your outdoor decorating. Your local salvage yard can be a great place to find parts that can be cleaned up and repurposed to give your garden or patio a unique look. However, I just focused on one thing at a time, and before I knew it, my car problems started to melt away. Within a few months, my car was functioning perfectly, and I wasn't worried about it starting each and every day. This blog is all about choosing better auto service and knowing which problems to address first.
