3 Things You'll Need To Do Before Starting A Towing Service

Automotive Blog

If you have a flatbed truck or another truck that you can use to tow vehicles, you might be thinking about starting up your own towing company. However, before you'll be ready to get started, there are a few steps that you'll need to take. These are three things that you'll need to do before you start your towing service.

1. Ensure Your Truck is Well-Lit

First of all, you have to make sure that your truck is well-lit. You will be pulling off of the road and onto the shoulder to pick up cars that are broken down or that have been involved in a car wreck, and you may be traveling and pulling cars at all hours of the night and day. This means that you'll want to ensure that your truck is well-lit. The best place to start is with a tow truck light bar, which you can install on top of your truck to add instant additional lighting that will make your truck easier to see.

2. Purchase Insurance

Obviously, you will need insurance to keep your tow truck on the road. However, you will want to ensure that you also have ample coverage to pay for your customers' vehicles if they get damaged while you are towing them. Even if you are extremely careful when loading, transporting and unloading customers' vehicles, you never know when something could happen. Talking to your insurer about boosting your coverage can help you ensure that you are protected.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice

Even if you think you're a pro, it's a good idea to practice loading and unloading various types of cars until you get the hang of it. You'll want to be used to towing more than just your own car, since you'll have to load and unload cars of all different types and in all different situations. Consider putting your own car in various spots -- some more convenient than others -- and load them up. Then, ask friends and family members if you can load their cars up onto your truck. The more that you practice, the more confident you'll be when it's time for you to pick up vehicles for customers.

As you can see, there are a few things that you will want to do before starting a towing service. Luckily, following these three tips can help you get prepared for your new business.
