About An Automatic Transmission & Problematic Gears

Automotive Blog

Are you trying to decide if a new automatic transmission is needed for your vehicle due to problematic gears? There are actually a few ways to tell if an automatic transmission is not in good shape. Sometimes gear problems are not directly related to the transmission, as it can simply mean that other areas of your car are malfunctioning. In this article, you will discover a few of the things that might happen to a car when your car needs a transmission repair.

1. The Gears Make Whining Noises

If you hear whining noises when you are switching gears, there are a couple of things that could be causing the problem. It is possible that the gears are not receiving enough transmission fluid. All you have to do is get more transmission fluid placed in your car to fix the problem. Keep in mind that the transmission gear pump could also be worn out and making whining noise because it has to work so hard to pump fluid. A faulty torque converter can also lead to noisy gears, as it is the part in your car that transmits power to the transmission from the engine so the gears can work.

2. Delayed Gear Switching

When gears no longer shift as fast as they should, it is a sign that the transmission is going out. The gear shifting problem will usually become worse when it is related to a bad transmission. However, gear shifting problems can also happen when the transmission fluid is low or burnt. Another thing that can cause delayed gear shifting is a faulty transmission solenoid. Basically, the solenoid is important because it is used for regulating the flow of fluid throughout the transmission, which helps the gears function.

3. Occasional Jerking While Driving

A major sign that a transmission should be repaired in a timely manner is when it begins to cause your car to jerk. The jerking is sign that your transmission might go all the way out soon, which can happen suddenly while you are in heavy traffic. It is important to make sure the jerking is not caused from the gears going out, as they can simply be replaced. A mechanic might be able to rebuild your transmission if it is going out so you won't have to purchase a new one. Take your car to a mechanic so he or she can determine if your transmission is damaged or not.
