3 Reasons Your Tires Might Have Slow Leaks

Automotive Blog

If you are experiencing slow leaks with one or more of the tires on your car, there are several reasons this might be happening. If you are sick of having to put air in your tires every few days, you should take your car to a tire shop to have them examine and fix any problems they may find with your tires.

Tire Rims Are Not Sealed

When your tires are mounted on your car, the tire shop will seal them. This seal is placed where the tire meets the rim, but the seal can wear out over time. If this happens, air can leak out of the tire, and this is one of the most common causes of slow leaks in tires.

A tire shop can fix this problem in one of two ways. The easiest way is to place a bead of tire sealant all along the edge where the tire meets the rim. A second method is to fill the tire up with air that contains sealant. This sealant works from the inside of the tire to fill any holes or gaps that could potentially cause air to leak out.

Leaky Valve Stems

Tires can also develop issues if the valve stems are worn out. A valve stem is the part on your tire that you use to air your tire up. The stem has a small cap on it which you must remove to air up your tire, and this entire part can wear out over time. If it wears out, you will need to have it replaced because it can be a major source of air loss.

Tires Have Foreign Objects In Them

A tire shop will always carefully examine and test a tire to look for foreign objects, such as nails or glass. If an object gets into a tire, it will also cause the tire to leak. To fix this problem, the tire shop will locate and remove any foreign objects. They will then fill and seal the holes left after removing the objects. If the holes are too large, they will suggest replacing the tire.

Tires are one of the most important parts of a car, and having reliable tires is vital. If you are experiencing any problems with your car tires, or if you are ready to replace the old tires you have, contact a tire shop to schedule an appointment today.
